SWAT SITUATION IN CHESAPEAKE, VA

According to police officials there's a suicidal barricade situation between 4100 block of Nina and 4100 block of Pinta Drives, near the Chittum Elementary School (see map below).

The approximate location is in the 4100 block of Pinta Dr. where the heaviest police activity and SWAT vehicles were seen. Below, Chesapeake PD keeps the roads blocked.

The situation apparently started as the man, armed and suicidal, walked out of his backdoor and fired several shots in the air from a gun.

The Western Branch area of Chesapeake, Virginia is a typically calm and quiet place to live. But, Thursday morning parents were rocked by phone calls from the Principal of E.W. Chittum Elementary school informing them of an increased presence of police on campus.

"The Chesapeake Police Department contacted us this morning to inform us that they are addressing an incident in the area near our school.

While the police department feel the situation is contained and our students and staff are not at risk, they are sending an officer to our campus as a precautionary measure.

We are continuing with our instructional day as normal and are in constant contact with authorities. Should the situation change, we will take immediate action and you will be alerted. Please know that safety is always our top priority at Chittum Elementary. -Chittum Principal said via recorded phone message

Details in the recorded message were few and left many parents with a lot of questions and concerns. Though, the principal did try to reassure parents that the school was not on lockdown and the increased presence of police was merely precautionary.

Neither the police or school officials feel that this SWAT action in the nearby neighborhood is any threat to the school at this time. Chesapeake Police did add an officer to the campus.

Chesapeake Police report that they were working to get a suicidal man to surrender peacefully. The man refused to leave his house on Thursday morning in the 4100 block of Nina Drive. "Police are actively attempting to negotiate his safe exit from the home," officials said.

"SWAT has been activated, and have been deployed while negotiations are attempted with the male".

Traffic for Nina Drive, Pinta Drive, and San Salvador Drive is all affected and residence near these areas should remain indoors until the incident is resolved.

Situation Doesn't End Well: Man who barricaded himself in house dies, police say

This person, a man, was armed and suicidal, and refused to leave the home. He reportedly went out the back door of the house Thursday morning and fired several shots, police said.
Around 12:25 p.m., police said the man went out the front door of the house and fired guns toward SWAT officers on scene. Police said officers returned fire, but it was unknown whether he was struck.

The man went back inside after this exchange, and officers then spoke to him again.
Police said a short time later another shot was heard from inside the house before it was determined the man had died.

An investigation into his death is ongoing.
